After School Classes

Drumming & Song

After School Programme

Course Description

Our enthusiastic and beloved Kspace music teacher, professionally trained Nick Bello, takes children on a fantastic journey through the joy of the drum!

Drums are an integral part of traditional bonding and music in almost all cultures. The content for this exciting course focuses on an interpretation of traditional West African languages and a folk style song called ‘FUNGA ALAFIA’.

Learnt by millions of children all over the globe, this beautiful song has a powerful message, easy to learn lyrics, memorable beat and catchy tune.

Goals

The goal of this course is to combine a love of language, singing, performance and musical instruments together. The children will deliver the song with a lot of energy and learn how to express emotion through the drums too.

Content

To give the lessons a little bit of a twist we also introduce some different types of drums from time to time, like tambourines, tapping sticks, agugu, sea drums and even the xylophone!

Many children have casual experience with drums, but in this class we start from the basics so that we can get really connected with the instruments. We will be exploring:

  • What is a drum?
  • How does it work?
  • Hand coordination
  • Rhythm Development
  • Effective listening
  • Teamwork
  • Drumming games
  • Cultural appreciation of Yoruba and/or Vai Origin vocabulary

Kspace students and visitors make friends and enjoy a very upbeat hour in this music circle!
