Siblings ‘Mummy & Me’ Workshops
For parents and their children.

There are many reasons for preparing your child for a new sibling that is due to arrive, or for helping them adjust better to the dynamic in your home. We discuss how to help siblings play and interact safely with each other, what kinds of activities work well for children at different developmental levels, and how to begin teaching children to resolve conflicts and be good problem solvers. We will also discuss how to parent children with different needs and temperaments in order to foster positive relationships.

Sibling Rivalry Workshops

At Kspace we understand how difficult it is for mothers to balance time and focus, especially when a new baby is about to arrive or your older child/children just generally feel left out!

Course Content

Our sibling workshops run for anything from just a one-hour circle time that focuses on building empathy, to four longer sessions spread over a one month period.

Our main aims are to:

  • Refocus on the older sibling so that they do not feel alienated or less important
  • Create bonding opportunities between mother and older child so that you can laugh, engage and enjoy
  • Clarify the older child’s position in the family as the ‘big boy’ or ‘big girl’, make them proud of their place and develop a sense of responsibility
  • Work through games and activities that make some of the ‘chores’ with new babies seem appealing so that they can help (e.g. identifying/carrying nappies/diapers)
  • Encouraging the older sibling to share things
  • Practicing soft touch and compassion
  • Instill empathy
  • Give mothers a forum for discussion and feedback

Using Kokomo puppets and other lovable characters we will demonstrate love and responsibility with mummy and child. We will carry out a different ‘responsibility’ each week, e.g:
- Feeding
- Bathing
- Sharing Story Times
- Sharing love and cuddles
- Dressing
- Going out with mummy
- Singing, laughing and cooing!

Songs are based upon supporting the older sibling and making them feel like a very important figure to the baby.

Feedback

In each session we allow a section to ask parents their area of most concern of biggest challenge raising their siblings and then we attempt over the next weeks to integrate discussion or tasks to get over these barriers.
